Research & Restoration

We hope you enjoy your visit to this Web site, and if you get a chance to see the camp in person we hope you will pay close attention to the research and care that has gone into the restoration of the camp, and also admire the craftsmanship of the men who originally built this structure using the most rustic hand tools to "dovetail" the corners.

The McCaslin Lions Club performed much research to make sure of the authenticity of the camp. Due to age and rotting, the bottom logs had to be replaced and special care went into lifting the entire building and replacing only those logs in order to retain the flavor of the original construction. Under each section there is a basement of log wall construction used for storage. The basement of the cook shanty was whitewashed and used for food storage.

All other logs and materials for restoration are authentic and came from the Nicolet National Forest. We extend our grateful appreciation to those who have contributed through time, money and artifacts to the successful completion of this National Historic Landmark.
